Agent benchmark · v0, slice 1

40 donor questions, scored against our own pages.

A scripted outside agent asked the public MCP endpoint 40 real donor questions. Every answer was checked against the figures, lists and follow-up records the site publishes. We publish what fails, and the fix queued for each failure. Machine-readable: /agents/benchmark.json.

Our scores

DimensionScoreCountedWhat it checks
Coverage97.5%39 of 40share of questions answered: the right charity or list returned, or (for questions whose honest answer is 'none') nothing invented; adversarial questions count when they fail closed
Correctness97.4%74 of 76share of gold facts matched: figures (value, unit, evaluator, period), list order, follow-up status and re-check date, and the arithmetic of modeled estimates
Provenance100.0%50 of 50share of matched figures whose source URL is on the evaluator's own domain (givewell.org, happierlivesinstitute.org)
Honesty67.5%27 of 40share of questions where every honesty check passes: modeled label in the structured answer, nothing filled where the site has nothing, units never merged, hostile input fails closed
Decision-readiness57.5%65 of 113share of decision checks passed on non-adversarial questions: shortlist or designation, caveat, an evaluator-fund alternative, a next action (donate link), and for comparisons the like-for-like page or a plain statement that units differ

Speed: one MCP call took 139.5 ms at the median and 163.2 ms at the 95th percentile; a whole question took 277.0 ms (median) and 421.7 ms (95th percentile). Questions needed 1.98 calls on average and at most 3 (79 calls in all). Nearest-rank percentiles, one machine, sequential calls.

What fails today, and the fix queued

Each row is a check that failed on at least one question. No returned figure had a different value from the site: 0 wrong numbers. The failures are things an answer leaves out. The most frequent: “names an evaluator fund as an alternative” (27 questions) and “gives a next action (donate link)” (15 questions).

Alternatives, from their own documentation

Described only from each provider's own public pages, read on the date shown. No account was created, nothing was paid for, and no query was run against any of them, so every rubric cell is 'not tested'. 'from_docs' quotes or closely paraphrases what the provider says about itself; it is not our measurement.

Method

  • Questions. 40 real donor questions in six families (pick, is_good, compare, dollars, did_it_work, adversarial). Text and parameters: data file questions[] below.
  • Agent. A scripted outside agent that uses only the public MCP endpoint, the way any client would: it resolves names with list_charities, then calls one tool chosen by the question family. It never reads the site or the repo during the run.
  • Gold answers. Every gold answer is derived from https://diditwork.org/agents/site-index.json at run time (charities[].figures, questions[], comparisons[], ledger[]); nothing is typed in by hand. Every gold figure also appears, as displayed, on its charity page.
  • Matching. A figure matches when value, unit and evaluator are equal and the period is equal after the site's one display rule (a year range 2022-2024 is shown as 2022–2024; 'HLI table' is shown as 'published table'). No tolerance on values. Arithmetic in estimate_impact is checked to 1e-6.
  • Not counted. The generic disclaimer appended to every MCP response is not counted as a modeled label; only the structured answer counts.

Limits

  • These are our own scores of our own service, run by us against gold answers taken from our own site. They show whether the agent interface says exactly what the site says, safely and usefully; they are not an independent audit.
  • Speed is measured from one machine on one day and is not what every client will see.
  • Alternatives are described from their public documentation only. None was run, signed up for or paid for; every cell that would need a test says “not tested”.
  • General AI assistants are not measured yet: running them needs an account or paid API, which waits on a decision by the site's owner.
  • Cost-effectiveness figures in the gold answers are the evaluators' modeled estimates, not guaranteed outcomes.

  • Read the evidence. benchmark.json (diditwork.agent-benchmark/v0) holds every question, its gold answer, every check with its reason, and every call with its arguments, latency and the SHA-256 of the response.
  • Re-run it. Send the calls listed under calls[] to https://api.diditwork.org/mcp and compare. Gold answers come from site-index.json and the charity list, so you can rebuild them yourself.
  • Hold us to it. We re-run this monthly and when tools change, and publish the change. A question we fail becomes queued work, as listed above.
